When Kari’s son Niko was unable to continue his studies at college due to ill health, the family needed a solution to ensure Niko could continue his learning in order to get into university.
Niko was a student at Hills Road Sixth Form in Cambridge and they told the family about the National Extension College (NEC).
Kari needed to quickly organise support for Niko to continue studying his A levels whilst ill and contacted NEC. Apart from learning at home during the COVID-19 lockdowns, this was the family’s first experience of studying through distance learning. They “were delighted” with the service they received from NEC and how well NEC’s flexible online courses fitted into Niko’s recovery process.
“The flexible nature of the course, being able to study at a time that suited Niko, was very useful and worked with his recovery,” says Kari.
Niko’s goal was to get the A level qualifications he needed to get to university to study maths. He enrolled on A levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths with NEC, meaning that he could continue his learning whilst unable to attend college due to his ill health.
With an unconditional offer to study maths at the University of Lincoln Niko sat his exams in Summer 2024.
Kari and Niko’s advice for anyone considering studying by distance learning:
“Make a schedule of your time – including some free time for breaks.”
Niko was supported throughout his study journey by NEC’s Student Support Team and Pastoral Officer, Karyn.
We offer all of our students a range of additional support options.
