World Mental Health Day is a day to show support for better mental health and to raise awareness of the importance of looking after your own wellbeing.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Worry and stress can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety or depression. Likewise, having a mental health problem or other illness can lead to stress. At NEC, we aim to take the stress out of education with expert tutor support, easy-to-use materials and a student support team ready to answer all of your questions. However, there are also ways you can maintain your own mental health throughout your studies.
Take control. Be as organised as possible. It’s not just exams that can cause stress. Many people experience it around assignment deadlines too. Create a relaxed space where you can study in a calm and structured way and give yourself time to take a break. Breaks where you have time to do the things you love will make your study time more productive.
Exercise. Keeping yourself physically healthy will lead to a more positive outlook and keep your stress levels down. This doesn’t mean you need to join a gym, though that is an option. Take the time to step away from your work and go for a walk.
Sleep well. It is tempting to stay up late when you have a deadline or exam coming up but it is more effective to maintain a routine and go into your work well-rested.
Get help. If you are struggling, there is no shame in asking for help. Whether it be a close friend, family member or a medical professional, talking to someone about your mental health is important and can make a world of difference. If you want to talk to someone anonymously, the Samaritans are always there to answer your call. For more information and advice on a range of mental health issues, we recommend you visit the Mind website.
